A new audio tour in New York encourages listeners to follow in the footsteps of the legendary singer songwriter Neil Diamond and discover how his Brooklyn roots and life in New York laid out the foundation for his illustrious career.
Neil Diamond's story is being played eight times a week at the Broadhurst Theatre in the hit show, "A Beautiful Noise: The Neil Diamond Musical." To accompany the show, the new audio tour gives listeners the chance to learn more about how Neil’s story came to Broadway.
The experience includes stories in Coney Island, New York University, the Broadhurst Theatre, and more. You can experience the full tour here.
In our conversation with The Neil Diamond Musical team and the tour's narrator John Friia, they dive into the inspiration behind the tour.
What was the inspiration behind creating an audio tour to accompany A Beautiful Noise: The Neil Diamond Musical?
Neil Diamond and New York go hand in hand – Neil left his mark on so many iconic landmarks in the city so it seemed like a no-brainer to create an audio tour to show this Brooklyn boy’s New York journey to becoming an international music legend. It also adds to the Broadway experience when you can physically go to the locations we talked about in the show and learn more about the production, NYC history and Neil.
What types of stories can people expect to hear?
People will learn a little more about Neil Diamond and his connection to some famous New York City locations on top of learning about the history of those spots. For example, we talk about the history of the Winter Garden and its connection to what Times Square used to be, Tin Pan Alley, the Brill Building and more. We also get a look behind the scenes from producer, Ken Davenport, on how he brought the show to Broadway.
What do you hope listeners will take away from the tour?
I hope people walk away with not only a better appreciation for Neil’s musical journey, but also more knowledge about the city that helped mold Diamond. It’s a city where no matter where you grew up, you can become a success, but don't forget your roots. Do what Neil has done, pay it forward to the next generation of musicians and creatives that grew up in the same place as you.
How do you think audio tours can be used in the Broadway space and beyond?
For us, it’s about creating experiences and bringing the world of Broadway into a new area - audio tours. We hope that this tour expands upon someone’s experience of seeing A BEAUTIFUL NOISE on Broadway and leaves them with a greater appreciation for Neil’s life, artistry, and the musical.
What advice would you give others who are interested in using audio tours to share their unique stories?
Find something you’re passionate about and make it happen. There is so much to explore in New York City - the possibilities for tours are endless.
